the hq mindset

Now you can see it.

Ten ways of seeing, in one place. And the one thing seeing is for.

Twelve notes ago, at the start of all this, I told you the way of seeing comes first. That before any tool, any program, any fix, you have to be able to see your company the way the people inside it see it. You didn’t have a method yet. You had a lens to build.

You’ve built it. Here are the ten ways of seeing, in one place, the whole HQ Mindset in a single frame:

  1. There is a gap. Every owner casts one. The ones most certain they don’t cast the longest.
  2. The frontline’s Tuesday is the truth. Not the boardroom, not the report, not the good day. The ordinary one.
  3. Culture is countable. “You can’t measure that” is usually someone protecting a number they’d rather not see.
  4. The distortion starts with you. Before you conclude the problem is your people, rule out that it’s your lens.
  5. Model, then merit. You cannot reward a behavior nobody has seen. The order is the whole thing.
  6. Performative culture is detrimental, not neutral. A value your building contradicts isn’t zero. It’s negative, and it compounds.
  7. Purpose, vision, values are uncovered, not invented. You cannot brainstorm your way to what you already are.
  8. Belonging is built in small rooms. You cannot feel at home in a space large enough to disappear in.
  9. This is practice, not a fix. A fix has an end date. A practice has a rhythm.
  10. Use the tool, develop the people. The tool was never the point. The person always was.

Read down that list and notice what it is. Not ten tips. Not a checklist. One way of seeing, shown from ten angles, and every angle points at the same thing: the human beings in your company, seen clearly, taken seriously, worth the honesty. That’s the Human Quotient. That’s the whole reason any of this exists.

Seeing is not the same as closing.

Here is the hard, honest turn, and it’s the reason this is a beginning and not an ending. You can now see the gap. That is real, and most owners never get there. But seeing a gap and closing one are two different acts, and no amount of clear sight closes anything by itself.

The HQ Mindset is the way of seeing it. The HQ Method is the way of closing the gap.

Everything in this series was the first half. The Method is the second: the Score that measures the Shadow, the Tools that model the behavior, the Cycles that turn insight into practice, the small rooms where it all actually happens. The seeing makes the closing possible. The closing is where the work lives.

Take the ten with you.

I made you a one-page version of all ten, free, no email, nothing to sign up for. Print it. Put it somewhere you’ll actually see it on a Tuesday, which is, after all, where the truth lives. Not on a wall to be admired. On a wall to be used, the difference this whole series has been about.

The machines are coming, and they’re going to make every company faster. Some owners will use that speed to become smaller and colder. You’re not going to be one of them, and you haven’t been since the first post, when you were willing to admit there was a gap at all. You’ve spent twelve posts learning to see your people more clearly. Now go close the distance between you.

Let’s take care of each other,

Tim

Oh, and PS… first, count how many passes the team in white makes:

In 1999, two Harvard psychologists asked people to watch a video and count how many times a basketball got passed around. Halfway through, a person in a full gorilla suit walked into the middle of the frame, turned to the camera, thumped their chest, and strolled off. Nine seconds, dead center. About half the viewers never saw it, and when the tape was replayed, some swore it was a different video.

Years later, researchers hid a gorilla in a lung scan and handed it to expert radiologists hunting for tumors. More than eight in ten missed it. The experts. Looking right at it. That is the whole reason this series exists. The gap has been walking through the middle of your company, thumping its chest, for years, while you counted passes. You’ve seen it now. And here’s the good news the gorilla taught us: once you’ve seen it, you can never go back to not seeing it.
