Privacy policy
Short version: We collect what you hand us, we use it to do the thing you asked for, and we do not track you around the internet or sell your information to anyone. The longer version is below.

What we collect
Two kinds of information, and that’s all we receive.
What you give us directly. When you subscribe to Field Notes or fill out a form on this site, we collect your name, your email address, and whatever you choose to write in the message. You type it, we receive it. Nothing more is pulled from you in the background.
Aggregate traffic data. We use Fathom Analytics to see how the site is doing: which pages people read, where they arrived from, roughly which country they’re in. Fathom does not use cookies and does not collect personal information. It cannot identify you, and neither can we. It tells us a page was read, not who read it.
What stays on your device
This site has four front doors. If you pick one, your browser remembers which one you picked so you don’t have to choose again on every visit.
What gets saved is one short word, and nothing else. It stays in your browser and never reaches us. We can’t see it, our analytics can’t see it, and no other website can read it. It isn’t an identifier, it isn’t connected to your name or your email, and it says nothing about you as an individual. It exists because you clicked a button asking to be remembered.
You can clear it any time. Choose a different door on the home page, or clear this site’s data in your browser settings. It’s yours to remove because it lives on your machine and not on ours.
What we don’t do
- We don’t run advertising pixels or trackers from Meta, Google, LinkedIn, TikTok, or anyone else.
- We don’t follow you across other websites.
- We don’t put an identifier on your device.
- We don’t build a profile on you.
- We don’t sell, rent, or trade your information. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
That last one isn’t a legal formality. It’s a decision. A company built on the idea that people are the point does not treat the people reading its work as inventory.
Why we collect it
- To reply to you when you write to us.
- To send you what you asked for, like Field Notes in your inbox.
- To understand which writing lands, so we make more of what’s useful.
Who else touches your data
A few trusted services help us run things. They process your information on our behalf and only for these purposes:
- Mailchimp manages our email list and sends Field Notes.
- Fathom Analytics measures aggregate site traffic without cookies or personal data.
- WP Engine hosts the site and keeps standard server logs for security.
We choose vendors who take privacy seriously, and we don’t hand your data to anyone outside what’s needed to run the site and honor your requests.
Email, and how to leave
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you’re off the list, no questions, no friction. You can also email us and we’ll remove you by hand.
Your rights
You can ask us what we have on you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email [email protected] and we’ll take care of it. We don’t charge for this, and we won’t make it hard.
The door preference is the one thing we can’t handle for you, because we never receive it. Clearing it takes one click on the home page or a moment in your browser settings.
Children
This site is meant for adults running and working inside companies. It isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect what you share with us. No site can promise perfect security, and we won’t pretend otherwise. If something ever goes wrong, we’ll tell you.
Changes
If we change how we handle your information, we’ll update this page and change the date at the top. If the change is significant, we’ll say so plainly.
