hq stands for human quotient

What is HQ? It’s the most important number your company isn’t tracking.

Not a vibe. Not a culture score from a survey your team filled out reluctantly. A real, weighted, research-backed measure of how well the human experience inside your company is actually working… as well as the means to actually improve it.

Underneath the number sits a way of seeing: ten convictions we call The HQ Mindset.

so what does hq actually measure?

HQ measures three things:

  • How well your people belong: whether they feel seen, valued, and connected to something larger than their job description.
  • How consistently your people are growing: whether managers are developing them deliberately or just managing tasks.
  • How often your people break through: whether your culture produces momentum, innovation, and results that surprise even you.
THE HQ SCORE

Each of those three areas is measured through structured tools, manager behavior, and a 57-question assessment administered twice a year.

The result is a single weighted score, out of 200 points, that tells you exactly where you stand and exactly where to focus next.

a number you already trust

You already know what NPS is. HQ is the same idea, pointed inward.

The difference is what you do with it. NPS tells you what customers think. HQ tells you what’s actually happening between your leaders and your people, and then it gives you the tools to change it.

Net Promoter Score measures how likely your customers are to recommend you. One number. Immediate clarity. HQ does the same thing for your employees: one number, measured consistently, tied to real behavior change. Not a retreat. Not a motivational poster.

between the idea and the reality

There’s one metric most companies never think to measure.

Every leader casts one: a shadow.

The Shadow is the gap between what you believe your culture is, and what your employees actually experience day to day.

I’ve seen it a hundred times: Most owners believe they run a good culture. Most employees experience something more complicated. Neither side is wrong. But that distance, that gap, is where disengagement quietly lives, and where turnover quietly starts.

The Shadow is measured as part of your HQ Score. It’s the number that tells you where your culture stands, and how honest your picture of it is.

It’s also the metric that changes everything when leaders finally see it.

A contractor I worked with was proud of his retention. Told me nobody ever leaves. His ops manager later told me three guys had quit in six months and the owner never asked why.

A jeweler ran a customer appreciation event every year. Standing ovation from the community. Her bench jeweler left the following Monday. Nobody on the team knew his daughter’s name.

An owner told me his team loved the culture. I asked his warehouse lead what the culture was. He said “I just try to stay out of the way.”

This isn’t a team-building day. It’s a system.

Not a retreat

Retreats feel good for 72 hours. The HQ Method is a 12-month implementation with tools your managers use in real time, with real teams.

Not a personality test

Knowing your team’s archetypes doesn’t tell you what to do Monday morning. The HQ Method gives managers specific, practiced, repeatable behaviors.

Not a slogan

“People are our greatest asset” is a bumper sticker. HQ is a score. Scores move. Movement is measurable. Measurable things improve.

what the method is built on

The foundation is rigorously researched and proven: neurology, psychology, sociology. Maslow and Ebbinghaus. Loewenstein and Skinner. Mark and Moss Kanter. Habit formation, microlearning, the science of how people actually change. We can give you, in a nod to Richard Feynman, a simple, clear understanding of the hard science behind everything we believe and do.

Ten Ways of Seeing

The HQ Mindset

The score and the tools come later. First there is a way of seeing your company that most owners were never taught. Ten convictions sit underneath everything HQ measures.

1

There is a gap.

The company you think you run and the one your people clock into are not the same place. Everything starts with admitting the distance.

2

The frontline’s Tuesday is the truth.

The real story of your culture lives with the people doing the work, not the people describing it.

3

Culture is countable.

Soft does not mean unmeasurable. Belonging, growth, and trust leave numbers, if you bother to read them.

4

The distortion starts with you. Look there first.

The biggest lever on your culture is the person in charge. So that is the first place to look, not the last.

5

Model, then merit.

When the people in charge do the work themselves, the culture follows. When they only sponsor it, it stalls.

6

Performative culture is detrimental, not neutral.

The most common mistake good companies make. A hollow gesture lands in the negative, because now your people have proof.

7

Purpose, vision, values are uncovered, not invented.

You do not write your values. You dig up the ones you are already living.

8

Belonging is built in small rooms.

Nobody feels seen in a crowd. Belonging is built in rooms of six to twelve, by design.

9

This is practice, not a fix.

You do not install culture and walk away. You practice it, like fitness, or it fades.

10

Use the tool, develop the people.

Use the new tools. Keep developing the people, because they are the one advantage nothing can copy.

The HQ Mindset is the way of seeing it.

The HQ Method is the way of closing the gap.
