Found it cheaper online? Good. Let’s look at the next ten years.

We compare better than people expect. Most folks who walk in with a Blue Nile tab open figure we’ll be hundreds more. Then they see the number. More often than you’d guess, it’s close. Some days ours is lower. Some days it isn’t, and we’ll tell you which. Either way, the sticker is only the first number. A ring gets worn every day for the rest of a life. What it takes to keep it that way is the part no product page prints. So we did the math out loud. All of it, including the parts where they beat us.

Type in the price you found. We’ll add up what happens after the box arrives: the resizes, the repairs, the trips to the post office. Only the things with a real price tag. The rest we left unpriced, on purpose.

Fair is fair. Here’s what Blue Nile does well.

  • More loose diamonds than any one store could hold. Over 100,000 of them.
  • Thirty days to send it back, no questions asked, with a paid label.
  • You never have to put on shoes.

Where it’s a tie

  • A lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
  • An insurance appraisal with the ring.
  • Free cleaning, prong checks and polishing.

Their fine print

From Blue Nile‘s published warranty and services pages, checked September 2026.

  • One free resize, in the first year, up to two sizes. After that, resizing costs extra.
  • The warranty covers manufacturing defects. Prongs that wear down, or a stone that falls out from everyday wear, are not covered.
  • The free cleaning and prong checks happen at their bench. You mail the ring in and pay to ship it there; they pay to ship it back.
  • Have any other jeweler work on the ring and the warranty is void.
  • The warranty belongs to the original buyer only. It can’t be handed down with the ring.

What we didn’t put a number on. On purpose.

  • You see the stone. Next to other stones, under our light, on her hand or one like it.
  • The ring stays in town. A resize before the proposal or a prong the week of the wedding gets done here.
  • A person who knows the ring answers the phone.
  • Our guarantee follows the ring. Hand it down and it’s still covered.
  • Generations of Laskers standing with you. Since 1928.

One more thing belongs on this list. It’s the biggest. When you buy the ring here, the money stays here. It pays the jeweler at the bench, who lives a few streets over. It pays the person who answered the phone. Then it does what money in a town does. It becomes the sign on the outfield fence, the school auction, the hospital gala, the float in the parade. We’ve been part of that since 1928. It’s part of what you’re paying for, even though we can’t put a number on it. Buy the ring online and the same dollars leave town the day the box ships. They’re a fine company. Their money just goes home somewhere else.

Adjust our assumptions

Think we went easy on ourselves? Change any number and the ledger updates. Change the ring above and the ring-specific ones reset.
